Care to sit on the majestic steps of Vidhana Soudha and watch Yakshagana?
BANGALORE: Care to sit on the majestic steps of Vidhana Soudha and watch Yakshagana? Keeping with the spirit of chief minister H D Kumaraswamys ambitious proposal to have folk art performances in the states power centre' Vidhana Soudha' the directorate of Kannada and culture has proposed to use the very steps where he took oath as the CM' to seat the public for the performances.
The proposed Rs 50 lakh programme' to be called Janapada Jathre (fair of folk arts)' to be launched around mid-April' will be held every Sunday' though the show timing has not been finalised yet. "We are planning to launch it on a very grand scale. In keeping with the tradition of folk arts' they will be performed in the open air lawn in front of the steps' to ensure that the nativity and feel are retained'" Kannada and culture director Muddu Mohan said. Every Sunday' three of Karnatakas innumerable folk arts will be performed one after the other' with the tourist and mobile population of Bangalore city as target audience.
Each will be representative of a genre: a dance-drama form like Yakshagana' Sri Krishna Parijaata' Doddata or Sannata' a singing form like Gigi Pada' Tatva Pada' Sopane Pada or instrumental music and a dance form like Nandi Golu' Noolu Kunita' Patada Kunita or Hejje Kunita. ...Each event will also represent a different geographical area. For example' if the dance drama on that Sunday is Yakshagana from Dakshina Kannada' it would be followed by something like the Gigi Pada from Dharwad and the Kolata from Kolar.
"We are working at show timings and how to permit entry/exit as the Bangalore city police have raised security concerns. We have sent a proposal but discussions with the police and the department of personnel and administrative reforms is due'" Muddu Mohan said. With the CM himself eager to push the jathre as one of the highlights of Suvarna Karnataka - the states Golden Jubilee celebrations - security concerns appear to be taking a secondary place. But' Kannada and culture directorate has worked out a contingency plan: If Vidhana Soudha steps are not possible' shift the venue to Cubbon Parks bandstand. There is also a proposal to expand the project to district headquarters. "We have suggested that it would be appropriate to simultaneously hold similar fairs in all district headquarters
